The Role of Photography in 1970s Printmaking and Graphic Design
MGLC – Tivoli Mansion
At the end of the 1960s, photographic inserts began appearing in graphic prints and graphic design images alongside established visual elements. The use of partial or entire photographs soon became a popular expressive procedure, which we can trace throughout the 1970s and beyond. Comprising an exhibition and monograph, the project Photo/Print attempts to highlight this phenomenon of photographic images and photographic thinking in printmaking and graphic design. We are interested in which social, technical and conceptual innovations prompted it and how – given the different artistic movements and contexts – the photographically marked print changed in a fairly short period of just over a decade from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.
The exhibition includes documentary and exhibition components, with works by over 40 artists on display. Alongside the exhibition, a comprehensive monograph has been published, which among other things, places Slovenian production into the wider regional context.
